Mavic Zxellium Road Shoes

Mavic Zxellium Road Shoes
This road racing shoe is designed for ultimate performance for top competitors, combining comfort, an extremely light weight and the sort of rigidity that is needed to transmit power to the pedals very efficiently.

To start with the weight is only 620 g for a pair of Mavic Zxilliums, with a very thin carbon outsole at 5.5 mm thickness which still delivers power without excessive flexing and also puts you closer to your pedal than many other shoes.

A combination of padding on the tongue and ankle and a triple density insole helps to absorb vibration very well. The shoe is available in a very bright yellow or if you don't want to be seen from miles away you can also get them in white. For another £50 or so you can also get the Ultimate version.

Another main benefit is that they are extremely comfortable and feel very soft on your foot, while remaining stable when you pull upwards, thanks to the thermoplastic framework around the uppers and the use of a carbon heel counter. Adjustability is well catered for with three straps, to using Velcro and one with a ratchet. Not surprisingly the Mavic Zxillium reviews we’ve read give it high ratings all round.

Mavic Razor MTB Shoes

Mavic Razor MTB Shoes
This is a popular mid priced mountain biking shoe, that benefits from race influence in its design, giving it a good combination of comfort, reasonably light weight and strength for MTB use.

One aspect of this shoe that is highly rated is the quality of the tread, which grips very well on all sorts of ground when you are off the bike, while also making light work of sitting the pedals back into the cleats. The Mavic Razor comes in at 718 g per pair which is pretty good for a tough shoe.

Fitting and closure works using two Velcro straps and a ratchet buckle, with a well padded foam tongue particularly protecting the front of your ankle from tightening of the ratchet. This shoe uses a glass reinforced nylon sole which appears to be quite bendy unless you use it with a pedal that supports it well, rather than completely relying on the cleats for support.

One recommendation from Mavic Razor reviews is that the insole isn't really worth keeping in the shoe as it is quite spongy and not very supportive.

Mavic Avenir Road Shoes

Mavic Avenir Road Shoes
This shoe fits into the mid priced range of road shoes, giving all-round performance and an appearance that many cyclists seem to like. The soles are reasonably stiff with synthetic reinforced uppers and the combination satisfies most riders, except that they do flex more than some people like when ridden hard. However for the price, reviews of the Mavic Avenir reveal plenty of very satisfied buyers.

It is quite a shallow shoe which gives a feeling of comfort combined with a high back and a tight heel cup with security helped by a broad top strap which distributes pressure very well. There is a two lever buckle which is quite easy to use with your finger and thumb. Compatibility of the glass reinforced nylon sole is good with various cleat systems.

The Mavic Avenir is available in white which obviously may scuff and Mark easily, but fortunately there is also a grey version available.

Mavic Fury MTB Shoes

Mavic Fury MTB Shoes
This is a top end cross country race shoe for mountain bikers which comes with a high price tag, but which also appears to justify the expense, as warranted by some World Cup and Olympic heritage.

First of all the design incorporates an extremely rigid carbon sole, an energy lock heel brace, a reinforced toe cap and an upper exoskeleton that in combination grip your whole foot very securely. As a result they provide excellent power transfer under full race conditions. Despite the rigidity of the Mavic Fury, comfort is reported as good even on very long rides, partly as a result of the use of memory foam to adjust to your feet.

If you happen to be off your mountain bike, the sole also gives good grip on terrain that you might have to traverse.

A variety of smaller but important design features contribute to the good ratings in reviews of the Mavic Fury, including the specially shaped heel counter, the injected TPU frame, the triple density insole and the vibration absorbing heel with elastomer inserts for the metatarsals. If advanced design can be incorporated into every aspect of a mountain biking race shoe, then it looks very much as if Mavic have accomplished it with this shoe.
They weigh around 700 g without cleats.
